Rory Kenny: Motorcycle rider killed in WA Police pursuit crash in Calista identified as young father

A young father can be revealed as the man who died in a horrific dirt bike crash during a police pursuit on Wednesday night. Internal affairs officers are investigating the moments leading up 20-year-old Rory Kenny’s death in Calista. Police say they tried to stop the rider on Wellard Road about 9.15pm on Wednesday before he turned down Westbrook Street. He then drove back on Wellard Road with police in pursuit but officers then lost sight of the Mr Kenny. Police then came across crash where they administered emergency first aid to the driver until St John WA paramedics arrived at the scene. But despite their best efforts, Mr Kenny died at the scene. Mr Kenny’s father has since paid tribute to his son following the crash. “With a very heavy heart I woke up today with the news of losing my eldest son Rory, he will be deeply missed. But will forever be in our hearts and thoughts. I’ll forever miss and love you my son,” he said in an online Facebook post. On Thursday at the crash site one family member told media the young man “was just a baby, just 20-years-old, he didn’t deserve what happened to him.” Calista resident Hayley Chandler told 7NEWS she “had chills” when she heard the “bang” from the crash. Another resident said the street was “filled with first responders” following the incident. Police Commissioner Col Blanch said Major Crash officers were looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash, with oversight from the Internal Affairs unit. “At this point in time it looks like police officers did attempt to intercept that motorcycle and soon after that the motorcyclist crashed but that will be subject to an investigation,” he said. “At this point in time on all the information that I have, I’m supporting the officers involved.” Anyone with information regarding this crash or who saw the motorcycle being ridden in the area are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online here.
