Microbrewery in Shoalwater gets green light

An application for the construction of a microbrewery in Shoalwater has been given the green light by City of Rockingham councillors.

Led by Azacca Brewing Co, the microbrewery is set to be built on the corner of Safety Bay Road and McLarty Road.

At last week’s council meeting, councillors spoke in support of the development, saying it would improve the empty block, which has sat vacant for nearly two years.

Current plans for the venue include a brewery, kitchen, bar and restaurant, with the venue to accommodate up to 60 people.

However, during question time, Shoalwater resident Paul Sexton spoke against the application and expressed concern about development’s location in a residential area.

He also questioned how the microbrewery would affect noise and traffic in the area. “The opening hours are also too late for a residential area,” he said.

Cr Deb Hamblin wanted to “reassure” residents that the proponents were professional and were mindful of the impact the venue could have on residents, however.

“They have done all of the required plans and have tried to address all of the submissions received about the development,” she said.

“The proposal is also compliant with the zoning of the land.”

The City received 144 submissions from the public on the development, with 123 in support and 21 objections. Councillors said the proposal ticked all the planning boxes and was compliant in the zoning of the block.

“I see no reason why it should be knocked back,” Cr Mark Jones said. “A lot of work has been put in to reduce the impact on residents.

“Hopefully this will be a benefit for the community.”

The application was supported unanimously by all eight councillors present.
