Mandurah Crab Fest snaps National award
The Channel 7 Mandurah Crab Fest has claimed Bronze at the 2016 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in a big night for the WA tourism industry.
The local festival was up against tough competition in the Major Festivals & Events category with Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers (gold) and Australian Grand Prix Corporation (silver) edging out the City of Mandurah event.
WA tourism businesses picked up a total of 10 medals at the awards night held in Darwin last Friday, as Perth was named the host for next year’s ceremony.
North West business Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures picked up its first National Gold medal in the Adventure Tourism category, which follows a Bronze medal in the Unique Accommodation category in last year’s award program.
This year’s Channel 7 Mandurah Crab Fest will be headlined by urban/pop group Justice Crew and Australian rock stalwarts Thirsty Merc with over 40 hours of free, live entertainment across the entire weekend.
Thousands of local, national and international visitors are expected to take in the annual two-day festival, which has drawn crowds of more than 100,000 people since 2011.
The Channel 7 Mandurah Crab Fest claimed Gold in the Major Festivals and Events category at the 2016 Perth Airport Western Australian Tourism Awards held in December.
Tourism Council WA chief executive Evan Hall welcomed the announcement that Perth would host the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in Perth early next year.
He said it would be a great way to showcase how Perth had evolved as a destination with the event expected to bring in more than 800 tourism industry leaders from around the nation.
Compared with when Perth last hosted the National Tourism Awards in 2011, a lot has changed – we will have a new Stadium, many more hotel rooms and a much more vibrant city overall,
As the WA medallists in tonight’s awards demonstrate, the State has a great range of amazing tourism experiences on offer for visitors and we look forward to showcasing our destination, experiences and products to the nation when the tourism industry travels to Perth en masse next year.

• Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures Horizontal Hotel – Unique Accommodation (Bronze)
• Sandalford Wines – Tourism Restaurants & Catering Services (Bronze)
