The Lions Club of Rockingham has donated 12 sets of lawn bowls to the Rockingham Bowling Club in a bid to help boost the club’s youth bowling programs.

Lions Club president Dennis Burges made the donation to bowling club patron Verna Nicholls and fellow patron and City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels at a special presentation last Monday night

The donation, which cost about $4000, was made to help boost the bowling club’s continued efforts to offer bowls coaching to younger players in the community.

The club has recently been involved in teaching students from Kolbe Catholic College and South Coast Baptist College the sport of lawn bowls.

Coach Chris Tibbits said the game did not discriminate against anyone and was open to all.

“Lawn bowls is not just a game for the old,” he said.

“It’s a family game; the recommended starting age is 12 years and upwards with no age limits.

“It’s non-contact, non-aggressive and can be played by pretty much anybody, male or female.”

The club is also looking to coach students from public schools, with students from Rockingham Senior High School’s Education Support Centre thought to be interested in becoming involved.
