Footy game abandoned during family feud

A football game between Kwinana Knights Football Club and Rossmoyne Amateur Football Club at Medina Oval ended abruptly on Saturday after a family feud broke out on the sidelines.

Kwinana police confirmed there was a fight between two parties with approximately 20 people involved. Rocks and bottles were allegedly thrown from both sides before a man approached the field during the match wielding a knife.

He was arrested and charged with being armed to cause fear and will appear in Rockingham Magistrate’s Court later this month.

Sergeant Wayne Byram said no one was injured during the altercation but more charges would possibly be laid if any further reports were made regarding the incident and encouraged witnesses to come forward.

“This is viewed as a negative from us and we take concerns very seriously and will deal with them swiftly and robustly,” he said.

In a statement on Facebook, a Knights spokesman said the club acknowledged the incident but stressed it was a dispute between families that had nothing to do with the club.

“This was a dispute between families in the area and had nothing to do with the football club whatsoever,” the spokesman said.

“We are disappointed that it happened at our ground as we pride ourselves on being a family oriented football club and would like to ensure to everyone that this is not a usual occurrence.”
