Fashionable looks galore

Gareth McKnightSound Telegraph

It isn’t a day at the races without fashions on the field and the Rockingham Beach Cup this weekend is no exception.

The Fashions on the Sand event will return again this year, with the best-dressed women and men attending the festivities on the Rockingham foreshore urged to enter.

The inaugural fashion event was drawn up at short notice last year but organiser Robyn Paterson said an increased line-up was expected in 2017.

“I saw the Rockingham Beach Cup advertised last year and thought they really should have fashions on the field,” she said.

“I have been involved in organising fashions on the field competitions in Tasmania before moving to WA and by the time I left, we had four categories and the whole thing attracted as many people to the races as the horses did.

“I’m hoping that is the way it goes here. I’m expecting this year it will be bigger and better.”

Ms Paterson is joined by Dale Kerford and Elicia Anders as this year’s judges, with the latter a seasoned fashionista and stylist on popular television show Married at First Sight.

Ms Anders said entrants should take Rockingham’s surrounds into consideration when selecting their outfit.

“I think the uniqueness of the event will attract a very eclectic mix of style from people,” she said. “It will be interesting to see how they interpret the fashions on the sand theme.

“Hopefully, they will be looking for inspiration from the beautiful colours that are evident in Rockingham — the vibrancy of the blue water, the flora around and beautiful spring flowers.”

Fashions on the Sand is open to men and women over 18, with entries limited to 100 and prizes worth more than $6000 available. Registrations close at 1pm this Sunday and the event will be hosted on the main stage at Churchill Park, with the presentations on the sand after the last race.
