City earns gold star for water

The City of Mandurah’s approach to water conservation and efficiency has achieved the organisation re-endorsement as a Waterwise Council — this year reaching gold status in the new tiered-recognition system.

The Waterwise Council Program is jointly run by the Water Corporation and the Department of Water and, until recently, was part of the ICLEI Water Campaign, a global water saving initiative.

The Waterwise Council program works with the Water Corporation and Department of Water to achieve reductions in scheme water and groundwater annually.

City acting chief executive Allan Claydon said reducing water consumption in City facilities and recreational spaces was important for future sustainability and the City was proud of recognised for its commitment.

“Water conservation is a big priority for the City, and it’s through ongoing efforts we’ve been recognised with the Gold Waterwise Council status,” he said.

“We’ve been recognised as a Waterwise Council since 2009, and this highlights our commitment to reducing water use in our community and maintaining it in years to come.”

The City will be formally recognised at a Waterwise Council Program event on May 9. The City is also in the running for the platinum award (council of the year) that will be announced at the event.
