City cat laws cannot be changed: Mayor
The City of Rockingham says it is unable to consider implementing local laws regarding the confinement of cats because there are no confinement laws included in State Government legislation.
The Sound Telegraph reported last month residents were demanding action after cats were frequently found to be roaming neighbouring properties in various suburbs.
However, Mayor Barry Sammels said because there were no provisions within the State Government’s Cat Act 2011, the City was not in a position to consider implementing such local laws.
“It is worth highlighting that attempts by other local governments to incorporate provisions in similar local laws has been disallowed by the State Government,” he said.
“Should the Cat Act 2011 be amended or updated in future to include confinement laws for cats, then the City would be able to consider implementing its own local laws.”
