City branches out to increase trees
More than 10,000 trees have been planted around the City of Kwinana in the past 10 years, with next week’s National Tree Day set to add many more to that tally.
National Tree Day was co-founded in 1996 by Planet Ark and Olivia Newton-John and has now grown into Australia's biggest community tree planting and nature protection event.
Each year about 300,000 volunteers take part in activities to raise environmental awareness.
As part of National Tree Day the City of Kwinana will be hosting its own event, where species such as paper bark and flooded gum will be planted in a bid to improve the understorey to attract bandicoots and fairy wrens.

“Held in various locations throughout the City, our ‘Living Landscapes’ series is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy nature with family and friends,” she said.
“As the “City of Trees” we are fortunate in Kwinana to be surrounded by nature and this initiative encourages the community to get involved.”
Free lunch will be provided for this weekends planting day.
National Tree Day in Kwinana will be held from 9am-noon on Sunday, at Sloans Reserve in Leda.
