Christmas market brings bags of joy
A Year 9 student from Warnbro Community High School’s education support centre has come up with a way to help other students across Perth using funds from the school’s Christmas markets.
Lachlan Reeves gave a speech at Bendigo Bank’s How to Help your Community competition, where he presented the idea of putting together backpacks full of school essentials for families who struggled to pay for them.
School staff have helped turn this speech into a reality, deciding to use the funds from their Christmas markets to help pay for the backpacks and supplies.
Items such as pens, pencils, scissors, water bottles and rulers will be included in each of the 45 backpacks, which will be distributed to eight different schools, from Mandurah all the way to Fremantle.
“I love school and learning and I want others to love it as well,” Lachlan said.
“Everyone deserves to have a good education and I want to help make that happen.” Education support centre principal Kim McCollum said she was glad the $2350 raised at the Christmas markets would be put towards a good cause.
“We decided Lachlan’s idea was one we should help make possible and so the funds we raised at the markets have been put towards purchasing the items for the backpacks,” she said.
“Several of the school prefects have helped him pack up all of the bags, which will then be delivered to the schools which have students who have requested them.”
