Charity relayready to roll

Kwinana will put its best foot forward next weekend, walking for 24 hours straight in support of people battling cancer.

Back for the second year and with a new name, Relay for Life Kwinana will be held at Calista Oval on October 5.

About 19 teams and 142 participants will take part in the 24-hour charity fundraiser on behalf of Cancer Council WA.

Relay for Life Kwinana spokeswoman Jade Tallowin said people from all walks of life took part, celebrating and honouring those with cancer and their loved ones.

“We walk together or by ourselves with time to reflect on why we are there,” she said.

“At 8pm we hold a candlelight ceremony to honour our loved ones that have passed and can’t be with us.”

Ms Tallowin said Relay for Life was a fun but moving event which helped thousands of people affected by the disease.

“We are lucky enough to be able to live ours lives to the fullest each and every day — though some aren’t that lucky,” she said.

“Some have limitations, some are receiving medial treatment, some are grieving from the loss of someone who had cancer and some are just struggling with their day-to-day life.

“We got involved because cancer affects every family and every house hold, it affected ours so as a family we came together to helps those who need it.”

Kwinana Relay for Life last year raised about $64,000 for the cause.

The Kwinana campaign is already forging towards a similar total for this year’s relay with $32,410 already banked.
