Carcass sparks Garden Island shark warning
A shark warning has been issued after a whale carcass was reported at Harding Rock near Garden Island this afternoon.
The large whale carcass, which is described to be in its “advanced stages of decomposing”, is located about 800m offshore and is surrounded by fringing reef.
The carcass was reported by Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions officers just after 3pm today.
Water users have been advised to take extra caution in the Harding rock area and nearby bays of Garden Island and keep informed on the SharkSmark website.
Fisheries officers and a land-based DBCA ranger are monitoring the situation.
Anyone who sights a shark is encouraged to report it to Water Police on 9442 8600.
