Brumbies hit straps

The Baldivis Brumbies have continued their winning ways after a slow start to the season, defeating the Mandurah Mustangs 11.13 (79)to 8.13 (61) at Baldivis Oval on Sunday.

Baldivis started the game slowly and were five points down at the main break before coming out stronger in the third term to pull away for an 18-point win and their second on the bounce.

Baldivis coach Craig Hamersley said he was pleased to see his side’s improvement in the second half.

“At half-time we had a bit of a chat; we didn’t really execute what we spoke about before the game,” Hamersley said.

“We came out with more hunger and intent and started to pull away.

“We probably didn’t put our foot down quite like I wanted to in the last quarter but we held enough of a lead to take the win.”

Edward Dann and Danny Watson impressed for the Brumbies, while key forward Daniel Kimberley also stood up with three goals.

Hamersley said his side had faced a few structural and work rate problems at the start of the season during their form slump, but the team was starting to improve.

“A few boys probably took pre-season lightly and to be honest after the premiership last year got a bit carried away and didn’t have an ideal preparation,” he said.

“Rounds one and two we probably felt the effects of it, but we are still building and will take a little while to build back to full strength but we are starting to get on a bit of a roll now.

“Boys are starting to get their fitness back, learning each other again and starting to play some good team footy.”

Baldivis are set to face a stern test this Saturday night as they face off against second place Pinjarra at Sir Ross McLarty Oval.

“This will be a really big test for us this week,” Hamersley said.
