Bertram Primary School, the first school in Australia to be awarded funding from Tennis Australia, has unveiled eight junior-sized tennis courts ready for students and the wider community to enjoy.

After receiving $8000 in funding from Tennis Australia through the National Court Rebate scheme, the school raised the remaining amount through community fund-raising efforts and local business support.

Coles also donated a further $2000 through the Coles Community Challenge.

Last month the school opened its newly resurfaced, multi-purpose courts that include marking for eight Hot Shots tennis courts, a huge boost for the school.

Over the past three years, 300 tennis racquets have been given to kindergarten students, plus introductory tennis lessons.

Tennis is in thecurriculum for all year groups from pre-primary to Year 6, supplemented by after-school programs, tennis excursions and carnivals.

With the introduction of the newly resurfaced courts, the school hopes to encourage greater public access to the courts.

Tennis West chief executive Michael Roberts said the school had fostered a great tennis culture.

Baldivis MLA Reece Whitby said he was thrilled to see the project come to fruition. “This is a great boost for Bertram Primary and big boost for tennis in our local community,” he said.

The school will share these tennis courts with local residents so families can play tennis, keep healthy and stay active,” he said.
