Baldivis second worst for water breaches

New figures from the Water Corporation have revealed Baldivis was the second worst suburb in the metropolitan area for breaching the winter sprinkler ban last year.

As the 2017 winter sprinkler ban began on June 1, data obtained by the Telegraph has identified Baldivis as one of the worst offenders, with 81 infringements recorded.

Topping the list in the metro area was Nollamara, with 126 infringements, followed by Baldivis, Banksia Grove (49), Byford (49) and Brabham (43).

In the City of Rockingham, Karnup and Golden Bay were the other main offenders alongside Baldivis, with 28 and 18 infringements respectively.

Secret Harbour, Singleton, Waikiki and Warnbro also had a handful of infringements between them.

Further north in the City of Kwinana, Wandi and Wellard had 21 and 32 infringements respectively.

Water Corp spokeswoman Clare Lugar said owners faced fines of $100 if caught.

“Property owners receive a $100 fine if they are sighted breaching the winter sprinkler ban by an inspector and a warning if they are reported by a member of the public,” Ms Lugar said.

The winter sprinkler ban applies to Perth, Mandurah and parts of the South West and Great Southern.

Water Minister Dave Kelly said with WA being one of the hardest places in the world to be hit by climate change, it was more important than ever to save water.

“While we did have some unseasonal summer rainfall in February, it made little difference to water sources dependant on our climate – dams and groundwater,” Mr Kelly said.

“Last year the sprinkler ban saved 4.8 billion litres if scheme water – which is enough to fill more than 2,100 Olympic sized swimming pools.”

Residents are required to turn off automatic sprinkler systems from June 1 to August 31.
