Artists given time to shine

Three Rockingham artists joined forces last week to showcase a variety of artwork to coincide with International Day of People with Disability.

Candice Raphael, Hannah Valenti and Rebecca Johnston are part of Mixed Palette Inc, a group which focuses on promoting inclusive practice in the community and has a core group of artists who have an intellectual disability.

The Imagine This art exhibition was held at the Kent Street Deli creative working space and showcased work by local artists Sheila Monohan and Julianne Ryan.

Works included watercolour, pencil drawings, acrylic, ceramics and stoneware. Mixed Palette co-ordinator Evelyn Lim said she wanted the three artists to showcase their “amazing work”.

“They really wanted to learn how to run an exhibition themselves,” she said. “And I knew between them, there was enough art to have a small exhibition.”

Ms Raphael recently joined Rockingham Regional Arts group while Ms Johnston is a ceramic artist specialising in colourful clay dogs.

In March 2013, Ms Johnston and Rockingham artists Tich Dixon entered Melville Sculpture Walk with the jointly produced Yellow Dog seat, which was sold to the City of Melville.

Its now a sculptural seat at Deep Water Point in Melville.

Although Ms Valenti has had work featured in other exhibitions, this was her first exhibition as one of the main artists.
