Advocate takes the plunge for homeless

A Rockingham advocate for the homeless will plunge down one of Perth's tallest skyscrapers on Friday to raise awareness and funds for a cause close to his heart.

Jonathan Shapiera, 62, will take part in this year’s QV1 Urban Descent Abseil for United Way WA.

After a few unexpected events, Mr Shapiera and his son ended up homeless.

They lived out of a car for nearly three years and experienced first-hand what it was like to live on the streets.

“I signed up for the abseil fundraiser because I want to show how close we can all become to being homeless and raise the profile of homelessness,” he said.

“I particularly want to create awareness about the problems that arise once you're lucky enough to get off the streets and receive housing support.

“There needs to be a continued level of support and that's what I'm advocating for.

“I'm taking the plunge with the hope of raising $15,000, which will be used to further support people via mentoring, engagement and employment pathway programs.”
