$2320 raised for victim

An outpouring of public support for Rockingham hit-and-run victim Phil Morrell has raised more than $2320 to help his recovery.

The 45-year-old remains in Royal Perth Hospital in a serious but stable condition after the incident and is facing a lengthy recovery.

Police say Mr Morrell was dragged about 25m along Regent Street while he was waiting for a taxi about 1am on New Year’s Day.

He suffered a broken pelvis and ribs, with fractures to his lower spine and a collapsed lung.

A GoFundMe Page was set up for Mr Morrell by close friend Sharon Johnson who saw the incident.

“(He’s) usually a lucky bugger, always seeming to fall back on his feet after some devastating life events,” Ms Johnson said.

“This time, he almost wasn’t so lucky. How his bony body survived this trauma is a miracle.

“Please dig deep for this man in his hour of need.”

Described as a jack-of-all-trades, Mr Morrell is understood to be well-known in the fly-in, fly-out industry.

Posting on the GoFundMe page, a number of friends described Mr Morrell as a loveable character.

“I went to see Phil in hospital yesterday and I'm asking everyone that is in a position to donate to please do so,” Rob Joynes posted.

“Phil has a long recovery ahead of him and every cent will help.”

Police say the car allegedly involved in the crash was found parked on a nearby street.

A red P-plate was visible, as was damage to the front and blood near the wheel arch, they said.

Police are yet to speak to the motorist.
