Residents in Perth’s south have been told to stay in their homes, shutting all doors and windows, after a raging fire burnt several sheds to the ground.

A hazardous materials warning was issued for the Oldbury area after firefighters were alerted to four factory sheds being ablaze on Boomerang Road just after 10am on Thursday.

The inferno spread to nearby grass and shrubbery, with firefighters calling in aviation support to drop flame retardant over the blaze.

Dozens of firefighters attended, with the blaze being brought under control by 11am.

He said the contents of what was inside the sheds was not known but miscellaneous goods had prompted the hazmat warning.

The warning is in place for the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, with residents urged to stay indoors as dangerous smoke continues to blow in the area in a north-easterly direction.

“People should stay away from the area,” DFES said in a statement

“If you are already in the area, take advice from emergency services personnel.

“People with medical concerns should contact their local doctor or call Health Direct on 1800 022 222.”

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
