Pride in bogan tag
Rockingham’s bogan stereotype was once again put in the spotlight in a rowdy episode of Bogan Hunters last week.
Rockingham man Kevin Ford was the star of the show, created by the makers of Housos and Fat Pizza, and is in the running to be named Australia’s biggest bogan.
Dressed in blue flannelette with a beer in his hand, Mr Ford said he was proud to be named a bogan and represent Rockingham.
He said he had always wanted to meet the Housos TV show characters Pauly and Shazza.
“When I first saw the Housos show I absolutely loved it because it reminded me of how I grew up in Dubbo, NSW in the housing commission area and we used to just run amok,” he said.
He said when he heard the show was coming to Rockingham last August, he attended the Rockingham Hotel’s Bogan and Proud event to catch a glimpse of the characters.
Mr Ford said he was picked by Pauly to host a barbecue for the show and he put on a wild event.
“It is the real Australia, people just having fun,” he said.
Bogan and Proud owner Mark Stoner who was labelled a “bogus bogan” on the show said he was not bothered by the remark.
“It is because I’m clean cut but I’m in touch with my inner bogan so I don’t care what they call me,” he said.
Largely unconcerned by the label, Rockingham Kwinana Chamber of Commerce chief executive Tony Solin said most people viewed the bogan label as a “beat up and a bit of fun” and it had little or no effect on business in the region.
