Movie Review: What to Expect When You're Expecting

What to Expect When You’re Expecting

Review: Narelle Butcher

Pregnancy is supposed to be one of the most magical times, but everything is put into perspective in the fun-loving film What to Expect When You’re Expecting.

Based on the 16 million-copy bestselling book, the latest romantic comedy is another chick-flick in the vein of Love Actually and Valentine’s Day, showcasing a series of couples living parallel lives.

It’s light-hearted and funny, and its stellar cast will also help put bums on seats.

Married couple Holly (Jennifer Lopez) and Alex (Rodrigo Santoro) have not been blessed with children and their desperate desire for a baby leads them down the testing path of adoption, and a need to impress assessors.

Jules (Cameron Diaz) and Evan (Matthew Morrison) on the other hand find themselves expecting after a whirlwind celebrity affair, and new couple Rosie (Anna Kendrick) and Marco (Chace Crawford) must consider their future when conceiving after a night of romance.

Life is a little more complex for Wendy (Elizabeth Banks) and Gary (Ben Falcone) who find they share baby news with Gary’s father (Dennis Quaid) and new wife Skyler (Brooklyn Decker).

Each couple has their own trials and tribulation with many funny moments along the way.

Men, dragged along to the film by their partners, can connect with the ‘‘dudes’’—a father’s group that really tells it like it is.

But the real wake-up call for women comes from Wendy, who is feeling rather glum after her pregnancy fails to measure up to her glamorous mother-in-law’s.

Aussie star Rebel Wilson finds herself in another Hollywood role, and she again steals the show.

While it’s certainly one for the ladies, don’t think its a film only to be appreciated by mothers. Women young and old will enjoy a giggle.
