Knights destroy Lakes

Sound Telegraph

The Kwinana Junior Knights Year 10 team secured their third straight grand final appearance and are now only one step away from back-to-back premierships.

The Knights secured their position after crushing Lakes in the second semi-final by 70 points at Santich Park on Saturday night.

Playing under lights in wet and windy conditions, the side shrugged off any hint of pre-game nerves early and gained a handy three goal lead at the first change.

The Knights looked easily the better side and their control of the ball in testing conditions was a big factor in holding off a determined second quarter Lakes’ attack to lead 7.3 to 3.2 at half-time.

Kwinana came out firing after the long break, inspired by the loss of one of their own, who was stretchered off following a crunching tackle, and put the game beyond doubt with a punishing five goal to nil third term.

In what coach Glenn Kirkwood proclaimed as “their most complete team performance of the year”, the team allowed The Lakes, who were a preseason favourite for the flag, only one more goal before powering home to win 15.9 (99) to 4.5 (29).

The victory earns the Knights a week off to rest and recuperate, while Lakes need to prepare for Sunday’s preliminary final clash with Jandakot, who overcame Armadale in the first semifinal.

Kwinana will meet the winner in the grand final at Fremantle Oval on Sunday, September 15.
