Cycling: Shanley makes the most of early split

Peel District Cycling Club had 50 riders in four grades line up for the third event in the road race calendar at the weekend.

A low A-grade turnout led to an A-B combination race over the two-laps shorter B-grade distance.

The field split in half early on, with three A-grade and two B-grade riders gradually building up a oneminute lead.

In the end, A-grade riders Peter Shanley, Paul Prottey and Shanon Sime took the first three places, closely followed in by Peter Mills, Warren Sexton and Bob Addy.

The C-grade race produced a close finish, with David Shailer just getting in front of Alison Dyson, and Arthur Connor a couple of metres back.

The D-grade race also split into two major groups early in the race.

Geoff Gilmore took the win from Frank Wittwer and Don Griffin, with Allan Cluning taking fourth.

Gilmore now has three wins from three rides and leads the rider of the year competition.

Dave Mitton continued his winning streak, taking the E-grade race from junior Steven Smith and John Bywater.
