Core Life boot-campers to claim rewards

ELISIA SEEBERSound Telegraph

Residents eager for fresh air and free fitness advice took part in the City of Rockingham and Kwinana’s joint Life at the Core boot camp yesterday.

The fitness morning, at Wellard Park on November 14, marked World Diabetes Day and a new link with Life at the Core and a free fitness app.

The iPhone app, Calico Burn&Earn — calories in, calories out — was created by Perth father-and-son team Kevin and Jack Owens, and is based on a rewards system to help people get active. Mr Owens said the Calico app gave each individual a personalised activity goal and rewarded them with local discounts or vouchers when achieved.

“Our focus is on how we can engage with the community on a wider scale and help people to make the small steps to activity, we are probably less focused on the elite person, and more focused on how we can get normal people to engage in trying that little bit harder,” he said. “You can walk, jog or cycle to achieve your personalised activity target.”

Mr Owens said Kwinana was one of the first councils to help support the community wellness concept and Calico fitness totems had been placed along Gilmore Avenue and in Wellard to help people gauge their fitness with the app.

Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams the program was a fun and creative way for residents to keep fit.

Mr Owens said people who signed up to a Life at the Core program could claim a free healthy eating cookbook, while stocks last.
