Cars an easy target for thieves

A surge of car break-ins in Bertram has led Kwinana police to urge residents to take valuables out of their cars.
Senior Sergeant Glen Willers said there had been 12 reports of theft from cars in the past week.
“There has been a decline in house break-ins but an increase in car theft,” he said.
“We suspect it is the same group of people who are breaking into cars in Bertram and surrounding Kwinana areas.”
Sen. Sgt Willers said it was important valuable items such as laptops, money and jewellery were not viewable or left behind on car seats.
“They (people) are breaking into cars left out in the open,” he said.
“These people walk up and down streets looking for cars — they smash the back quarter window and take whatever is there.”
Sen. Sgt Willers said the community could help police by reporting any suspicious behaviour and securing their vehicles.
“I know not everyone has an enclosed garage, but people need to try to get their vehicle out of view,” he said. “Try and make it as hard as possible for these people.”
Two men were caught red-handed by police on Saturday at 10.30pm in Medina in a stolen vehicle with stolen goods inside.
The pair were charged with stealing a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of stolen property and breach of bail. They appeared in Fremantle Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
