More uncounted votes have been discovered in South Australia just weeks after the state election was held. It comes after hundreds of uncounted ballot papers were found in Port Pirie by the South Australia Electoral Commission last week. It is not known how many ballot papers have been discovered but the votes were from the Enfield and Newland electorates. The Electoral Commission of South Australia (ECSA) has been contacted for comment but told the ABC the ballot papers would be included in the final count for the Legislative Council, due to be finalised on May 1. ECSA claimed a recount for the lower house seats was not required because it would not affect Labor’s win. Last week hundreds of uncounted ballot papers were discovered by ECSA at a Port Pirie pre-poll booth. More than 80 uncounted votes were discovered for the Narungga district where One Nation candidate Chantelle Thomas won the seat with a margin of 58 votes. The seat was recounted and resulted in Ms Thomas slightly extending her winning margin to 74 votes. Attorney-General Kyam Maher said election undertakings were extremely complex and involved more than one million votes and thousands of employees. “But I think South Australians have an expectation that (elections) will be conducted as effectively and efficiently as possible,” he said. “There is no suggestion that any outcomes affected by anything that’s occurred at the election, but many voters have been frustrated about their experiences before the election and on election day. “We’ve seen in the seat of Narungga, and now on initial advice for the seat of Dunstan a small number of votes that were not included in the original House of Assembly account. “Quite frankly, that’s not good enough, I think we all expect better.” Mr Maher said he was disappointed by the development and the government had bipartisan support to hold an independent review into the debacle. “We hope to have more to say about that in the coming days, because people in South Australia should know that elections are fair, free and unaffected,” he said. “It is a fundamental tenet of the electoral system, and people from around the world look to us in Australia as one of the best models of fair and free elections that every vote counts.”
