Three Springs and Morawa take dramatic wins in North Midlands hockey, netball

There were dramatic finishes in the North Midlands netball and hockey at the weekend.

Three Springs Bombers won the senior women’s hockey title in extra time in a thriller.

The Bombers opened the scoring in the hockey with a goal from a short corner by playing coach Heidi Taylor. The second goal came shortly afterwards from winger Kylie Dennis.

The Coorow Magpies’ Daneill Broun scored in the second quarter to narrow the gap.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Magpies swooped early in the last period, with Jacqui Benton levelling the match at two-all.

Benton then netted again to give the Magpies the lead before Wrey Haimona levelled the scores again with 30 seconds to play.

There was no score in the first period of extra time. Taylor, who was best on ground, scored the winner in the second period from another short corner.

In the netball, Morawa beat 2019 Mid West Sports Awards winners Three Springs by one point, 38-37, in extra time.

The teams couldn’t be separated at full-time and after two additional seven-minute periods before Morawa finally took the lead with just minutes to play.

Perenjori beat Mingenew 40-19 in the B-grade.

In junior hockey, ladder leaders Morawa Tigers and Coorow Magpies played in a showcase of talent, with Morawa’s Cameron Tomlinson opening the scoring.

Magpies goalkeeper Sam Cullen stopped several shots before Tomlinson scored again, with Morawa leading 2-0 at half-time.

The Magpies fought back in the second half, with the speed of Toby Passamani leading to a goal.

They threatened the Tigers with a succession of short corners, but Tigers cleared the ball and a goal from James Olsen sealed the win.

Cameron Tomlinson was best on ground.
