The Great Northern Football League will advertise for a new vice-president after Heather Brett stood down on Friday.

GNFL president Colin Cox confirmed Ms Brett had vacated the role after seven years because of changes in her employment, saying she had decided “she needed a change”.

Ms Brett has been on the GNFL board for nine years and was part of appointing Harry Taylor as the GNFL operations manager.

She will still travel with the women’s team for country week.

She is also a Mid West Sports Federation board member, but it is not clear if she will be continuing in this role. Ms Brett was contacted for comment.

Last night she took to Facebook to announce her departure, saying after 20 years of volunteering in the sport it was time to just be a spectator.

“For almost 20 years I have been volunteering for the sport I love - football. I was raised around it and have lived and breathed it. Through a variety of roles I have given much time and energy to it, often to the detriment of my own family,” she wrote.

“Last week I made a huge decision to walk away from my key roles, including that of current vice president of the league.

“Footy has brought me much joy but it has also provided unpleasant challenges and I have reached a stage in life where I no longer want this.

“I am incredibly thankful for the friendships I have made and the achievements we have reached together...For now I’m looking forward to simply being a spectator.”
