Geraldton’s Horizon sculpture is set to make its long-awaited return to Beresford Foreshore before the end of the year.

The City of Greater Geraldton council voted to replace the popular artwork and install a CCTV camera to monitor the area after it suffered a structural failure last year.

The $80,000 artwork exploded during hot weather in December last year. Vandalism of the sculpture had also weakened it.

City of Greater Geraldton mayor Shane Van Styn welcomed the news of Horizon’s imminent return.

“Horizon was a fantastic drawcard for visitors and greatly enjoyed by locals,” he said.

“At dusk on any given evening, there would be an array of people drawn to the Beresford Foreshore to snap a photo and enjoy this unique feature of Geraldton.

“We look forward to the return of Horizon and the addition of the CCTV to the area, which will not only enhance public safety but also discourage vandalism.”

Horizon by award-winning artist Lucy Humphrey will be the same size as its predecessor and be installed once the new CCTV is in place.

The council has already budgeted $30,000 for a CCTV camera to be installed at Horizon’s location. However, last month councillors agreed the city should investigate expanding that and have a CCTV camera network along the Beresford Foreshore in the wake of multiple indecent attacks on women walking in the area.
