Pemberton District High School’s Year 6 class has continued its commitment to helping wildlife, sewing and decorating pouches for wildlife injured by bushfires.

The pouches were donated to Wildlife Care WA which sent representatives Lyn and Garry Manuel to receive the pouches from the students on March 13.

The incursion on February 27 was organised by Pemberton’s Lyn Robinson who had been coordinating the collection of the materials required to make the pouches.

She was helped by Molly Scotman and Margaret Smith, who helped the students create the pouches.

Year 6 teacher Michele Schmidt said that despite many of her students never having sewed before, by the end of the session they were asking for sewing to become a daily occurrence.

“I actually found the boys to be really good sewers, so that was against the norm or the cliche,” she said.

It is not the first time the Year 6 class has turned their attention to the plight of injured wildlife, having raised nearly $1000 for the Australian Wildlife Conservancy last year.
