Junior explorer Metal Hawk has reported a high-grade gold discovery just 20km from Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

The company told the ASX on Monday it had identified gold in diamond drill core from its Commodore prospect at the Berehaven Project.

Four diamond drill holes were completed for 1210 metres at Commodore in November last year, with sampling of the last five metres of diamond drill hole BVD001 revealing a zone of high-grade gold mineralisation which has assayed 5.2m at 7.2g/t from 244.4m to 249.6m.

This follows Metal Hawk’s high-grade massive nickel sulphide discovery at Berehaven.

“We are thrilled with this high-grade gold intersection at Commodore,” managing director Will Belbin said.

“It is remarkable that we have intersected significant nickel sulphide and gold mineralisation with our first diamond drillhole at Berehaven.

“We have similar zones of quartz-sulphide veining in the other three diamond holes drilled and eagerly await assays for these samples before finalising plans for follow-up diamond drilling.”

Shares in Metal Hawk more than trebled in September after the explorer reported the nickel sulphide discovery at Berehaven.

Commodore lies 5km north of the former WMC Blair nickel mine, which historically produced 1.2 million tonnes at 2.62 per cent for 32,900t of contained nickel.

Horizon Minerals in November struck a deal to offload a suite of nickel prospects to Metal Hawk while maintaining exposure to the metal.

Horizon handed over the nickel rights on 12 tenements spanning 61sqkm east of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to Metal Hawk in exchange for a staggered handover of 4.5m shares.
