Multiple popular venues owned by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder will require proof of COVID-19 vaccination on Monday, in a change Mayor John Bowler described as “two years in the making”.

Under State Government directions, a range of venues and events will require proof of vaccination from people aged 16 years and older, with people who fail to present a vaccine certificate being barred entry.

This includes pubs and dine-in restaurants, as well as the following venues owned by the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder:

William Grundt Memorial Library, the Goldfields War Museum, Boulder Town Hall and Kalgoorlie Town Hall as well as C. Y. O’Connor Kalgoorlie-Boulder Men’s Shed are all exempt from the State Government proof-of-vaccination mandate at this time.

All City facilities will require visitors to sign in using the ServiceWA app or manually.

Mr Bowler said the proof-of-vaccination mandates were not council rules, with the City following directions outlined by the State Government.

“It’s been a while coming, in some ways it’s been almost two years in the making,” he said.

“We’ve been living in a vacuum (away) from the rest of the world, but the bubble is about to burst and we’ve got to get ready for it.

“These aren’t Kalgoorlie-Boulder specific rules, we just comply with State directives and that covers those local facilities.”

As recent cases of COVID-19 have been reported as far from Perth as Bunbury and Cunderdin, Mr Bowler said he expected the virus to reach the Goldfields soon and urged people to prepare for further rules such as mask mandates.

“Whether it’s days or weeks, I don’t think we can talk months, I think everyone knows we’re going to be like Perth, the South West and the rest of Australia,” he said.
