Two of Western Australia’s busiest hospitals have been listed as measles exposure sites after a new case was confirmed in the metro area on Wednesday.

The Department of Health said the latest case in Perth had visited both Royal Perth and Fiona Stanley hospitals in the past week.

A public health alert highlighted RPH ward 4B as an exposure site on three different occasions.

Health authorities also confirmed the case is unrelated to the Pilbara cluster, which prompted measles testing sites to open across several hospitals in the region.

Measles is a highly contagious virus spread primarily through airborne droplets. The virus can remain in a room up to 30 minutes after an infectious person has left.

Early symptoms include fever, fatigue, runny nose, sore eyes and a cough, followed by a red blotchy rash three or four days later, starting on the face before spreading to the rest of the body.

People are usually infectious from one day before their symptoms start and for four days after their rash appears.

It brings WA’s total measles caseload to 51, making the State responsible for more than one in three measles cases nationwide for the year so far.

Health authorities continue to urge people to check their immunisation records to see if they are fully vaccinated with two doses of the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine. Those born before 1965 are considered immune to measles.
