Activ closures: Disability enterprises take on almost 100 shattered workers, but many others remain anxious

Encouraging progress is being made finding new jobs for 750 people living with disabilities who were left devastated by their employer Activ announcing the closure of its large-scale industrial work sites in WA. In May, the 70-year-old charity dropped the bombshell it was closing seven supported employment sites starting in July, deeply upsetting the workers and also their families. But in between, the State and Federal governments pledged $11.8 million to keep Activ’s worksites open until the end of next year. Other disability enterprises are now hiring affected workers, with Ability WA, Alinea, Good Sammy, Intelife, Westcare and Workpower all receiving cash last month to establish a dedicated point of contact for Activ employees seeking jobs. They are also looking at taking on Activ’s substantial contracts such as assembling cutlery sets and packing headphones for Qantas, and filling show bags, enabling them to bring over more staff. Good Sammy chief executive Kane Blackman said his organisation had so far hired 28 Activ workers and was on-boarding a further 65 over coming months. “Some have joined our retail op shops, some have joined our recycling facilities and they’re being supported,” Mr Blackman told The West Australian. “We’ve got a strong commitment to grow those numbers ... that’s our core mission ... to employ and develop people with disabilities.” Alinea executive director Shane Yensch said his organisation had so far taken on about 10 Activ employees and hoped more would follow, considering expansion ideas such as finding more donation bin sites to boost op shop backroom work. “’We’ll take on as many as we can,” Mr Yensch said, provided it was economically sustainable. Workpower chief executive Lee Broomhall said 12 Activ employees had started work with the organisation or were undergoing trials across six social enterprises including wholesale nursery, multiple reuse and recycling shops, fire services and packaging warehouses. “We’ve had a handful of people who have commenced their customised employment journey and many more still working through their options,” Ms Broomhall said. “Currently, we have 25 existing vacancies as well as options for people in our customised employment program and we’re exploring additional business growth that will provide more vacancies.” She said Workpower had fielded 150 enquiries from former and current Activ employees since May, 60 per cent of whom had attended site tours to get a better understanding of the opportunities on offer. Since the 18-month lifeline was announced, enquiries had slowed, with Activ workers maybe thinking they would like to stay put for that time. “We would strongly encourage people to not hold off ... as they may then find there are very few options available to them,” Ms Broomhall said. Activ chief executive Michael Heath said the organisation continued to expand its own smaller worker-to-support staff ratio job opportunities including property care and electrical equipment testing and tagging. Activ has blamed the closures on complex new NDIS funding models that push the sector away from large-scale workshops towards smaller programs. Activ Action Team’s Amy Clark, whose brother David has worked there for 16 years, said the commitment shown by government and disability enterprises had been heartening but there was still uncertainty and fear. “For many ... it’s not just about finding a new job — it’s about filling that huge void and finding the place where they feel safe, valued and accepted,” she said. “Finding that right job could be difficult, which is why the affected workers and families remain anxious. The priority must be finding a suitable role, not just any role.” Mr Heath said Activ was committed to ensuring the right outcome was found for everyone. “We understand the profound impact that Activ has made in our supported employees’ lives over many years, and we’ll continue to support and advocate for them and keep them informed throughout this transition,” he said. Ms Clark said some were taking a significant three month pay cut while transitioning to their new job, which was unacceptable, suggesting the government funding should be used to top up the difference.
