Waroona’s rising star Angelina Dimasi is shaping up to become one of the State’s best young basketballers.

Dimasi has scored a scholarship at a prestigious American basketball college and will next year be flying to the US to fulfil her dream of becoming a professional basketballer.

The 18-year-old is following in the footsteps of older cousin Danika Pisconeri, also from Waroona, who played AFLW for the West Coast Eagles after a stint in the US playing basketball.

Dimasi will attend Miles Community College in Montana to play basketball.

She received two offers for scholarships, however opted for Miles City because it had a tight-knit community and reminded her of her hometown Waroona.

She is an all-rounder on the court and is often positioned on the big girls.

Predominantly a shooter, and standing 176cm tall, the Waroona product is light-years ahead of other players her age.

She was the youngest rookie player to snag a spot in the SBL Mandurah Magic women’s side, and had the opportunity to represent WA last year in Victoria.

I play my role — it’s about doing what the team needs.

However, the young gun has not had an easy ride to the top. She suffered an ankle injury which sidelined her for six weeks last season.

“It was a bit of a bummer, but I did a lot of rehab and tried to get back into it,” she said.

Dimasi said it was daunting to be leaving Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Hopefully by then my family will be able to come and visit,” she said.

I’m excited, but I don’t think it has hit me yet.

The teenager has racked up a notable amount of silverware that she will unfortunately have to leave behind when she journeys to the US.

She was crowned Waroona junior team association MVP for seven consecutive seasons — every year since 2013.

She won the Kate Martelli award last year and was female basketballer of the year in 2018.

Dimasi has been a WABL all-star, made the WA State team, and earned a silver medal at the national level.

The basketballer said she owed her success to her parents, brother, boyfriend and coaches over the years.

She said the Waroona Redbacks Basketball Association and Aussie Prospects had made her dream a reality.
