Household recyclables to be turned into artwork in new competition hosted by Shire of Harvey and Cleanaway

Turning rubbish into art is the goal of the latest creative competition to hit the Shire of Harvey. Hosted by the Harvey libraries and Cleanaway, creative young artists are being invited to take part in the Marine Birds competition to help celebrate the 2025 National Recycling Week. Divided into three categories, entries will require marine-themed artwork to be made from materials found in household recycling or waste bins. The mixed media collage category is open for children between the ages of one and five, and will require entrants to decorate an animal in a mixed media collage using the template designed by Cleanaway. The marine reef creatures category is open for those aged six to 11, while the marine creatures category will be open for ages 12 to 17. Both categories will require a three dimensional sculpture of a marine bird to be made from waste items commonly found in residential bins. Artwork entered into these categories will also need to include a short description of the marine species created, and a statement about ocean conservation. Containers eligible for 10 cent deposit schemes, such as containers for change, cannot be used, with the exceptions of lids and caps. Entries are open and will need to be submitted to the Shire of Harvey libraries by 5pm on November 7. Winners will be announced at the Australind Public Library on November 12.
