Katanning residents volunteered their painting skills at the weekend to bring a splash of colour to the town’s new mini libraries.

In April, the Shire of Katanning put out a call for woodworkers to lend their skills to build library boxes for the community.

Inspired by a global craze that began in Ireland in 2013, the small wooden boxes will be installed in public spaces across town and will be filled with free second-hand books for the community to read and exchange.

The Katanning Men’s Shed answered the call and built six library boxes for community members to decorate before they are installed across town later this year.

Shire community development and projects co-ordinator Denise Gallanagh Wood said 12 residents took part in painting the small wooden libraries set to make a colourful addition to the streets of Katanning.

She said the next step was choosing the locations for each of the mini libraries.

They would start popping up around town in spring.

“We are getting lots of feedback from the community regarding where they would like to see them,” she said.

“The libraries will be placed where the public can make the most of them.”
