Tour operators offering whale-watching expeditions are gearing up for an influx of visitors over the coming weeks as the annual migration of tens of thousands of humpback whales has begun early.

Abrolhos Adventures bookings, accounts and media manager Sammi Williams said the tour company launched its first tour of the season last Saturday after hearing the migration had begun.

“We’ve been getting word from our fishing charters that there’s dozens of whales already passing by — it’s only going to get better and better from here,” she said.

On the three-hour tour last week, she said guests saw more than 40 whales pass by, and snapped some great photos.

“As we head into the school holidays, excitement for the chance to see the migration is growing,” she said.

Abrolhos Adventures launched Geraldton’s only dedicated whale-watching cruises last year to “massive interest” from both locals and visitors.

Ms Williams said the whales usually migrated north in July and August to escape the cool weather before returning past Geraldton in September and October.

State Environment Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson last week announced the start of the migration, encouraging people to visit tourist towns along the Mid West and Ningaloo coast.
