Geraldton water polo round 2: Demons start season strong with back-to-back wins in men’s and women’s A-grade

Geraldton water polo’s 2025 season is heating up fast, with the Demons emerging as the teams to beat after back-to-back wins in both the men’s and women’s A-grades. Late Friday in women’s A-grade, Demons edged out the Serpents 5–4 in a heart-stopper. The Serpents looked ready to claim victory before a late surge turned the tide. Grace Johnson was outstanding for the Serpents, driving their early momentum, while seasoned veteran Sian MacDonald scored twice to keep the Demons in touch. The loudest cheer of the night came when Trixie Kerr found the back of the net with 14 seconds left to seal it for the Demons. The Serpents may have fallen short, but they showed they are serious A-grade contenders. On Saturday, B52’s continued their strong start with a 6–3 win over the Rats. B52’s Tenielle Hawke continued her fine form with two goals and several assists, while Emma Smith impressed with her tireless work at both ends. For Rats, Tessa O’Malley’s energy and determination kept the game competitive. In men’s A-grade, the Demons were ruthless with a 16–3 victory over the Rats. Joel Cross led the charge with four goals, while Zacc Cross and Laird Manuel added flair to the scoreboard. The Demons dominated from start to finish, though Oliver Green and Darcy Wiffen gave the Rats a few bright moments. In women’s B-grade, B52’s were clinical in a 7–0 shutout of Demons Yellow. Delta Horsman and Abbie Hagan controlled the middle, while Demons keeper Cassidy Prout kept the scoreline respectable. The Rats and Serpents finished the round with a thrilling 7–7 draw. O’Malley scored three for the Rats, while Kalani Cotto matched her for the Serpents, both showing leadership and scoring touch. In men’s B-grade, the Rats beat Relics 9–5 thanks to Bohdi Smith’s six-goal masterclass. B52’s backed up with a 15–3 win over Demons, led by Leo Prout and Ben Naisbitt with five goals each, and Callum Sojan adding four in a dominant display. In C-grade, Friday’s men’s clash saw Demons edge out Serpents 6–5, with Kasen Bunter and Eli Grigsby sharp in attack. Serpents were far stronger than their round one outing, with Scotty Dewers standing tall. On Saturday, B52’s overpowered the Rats 14–1, Mitchell and Lucas Ronan both in dazzling form. In the women’s competition, Serpents Blue defeated Rats 8–3 with Jill Gamble leading the charge, while Serpents Green were unstoppable in their 13–2 win over B52’s, thanks to a four-goal haul from young starlet Teale Jeffery. Demons Yellow claimed derby bragging rights over Demons Black 9–1, with Gaia Steele scoring four in an impressive display.
