Geraldton Softball Association: Marlins take down Rams in grand final to claim women’s division one crown

Marlins delivered a dominant performance to secure the Geraldton Softball Association women’s division one premiership on Saturday at Utakarra Softball Park, defeating Rams 20–4 in a grand final that quickly turned into a showcase of attacking softball. The contest began with promise as Rams took an early lead. Alanna McCartney doubled to bring in a run before Kristi March added two RBIs with a single, giving Rams a 3–2 advantage after the opening exchanges. It proved to be a brief highlight. Marlins responded with composure before unleashing a relentless offensive display. Taryn Purcell led from the front, driving in five runs in a commanding performance through the middle of the lineup, while Aisling Wilson was outstanding and deservedly named MVP. Wilson was near unstoppable at the plate, collecting four hits from five at bats, including a triple and a double, and playing a key role in shifting momentum firmly in Marlins’ favour. After edging ahead, Marlins broke the game open in the fifth innings with an extraordinary 11-run surge. Miley Gould, Purcell, Sam Roberts, Kyria Lumley and Michaela Coombe all contributed in a devastating stretch that overwhelmed Rams. The hits came from everywhere, with Marlins combining power, placement and smart base running. By full time, Marlins had amassed 24 hits and six stolen bases in a complete team performance that left little doubt about the result. Purcell capped off her day with a strong showing in the circle, pitching five innings, conceding just five hits and four runs while striking out three to secure the win. For Rams, March led the resistance with two RBIs, while Kate Harrison added two hits at the top of the order, but they were unable to stem the tide once Marlins found their rhythm. In division two, Marlins fell short in a hard fought 10–6 loss to Suiside despite an impressive start. Marlins jumped to a 6–1 lead after two innings, with key contributions from Sam Roberts, Lily Bellotti and Tumarra Jupp. Suiside responded in the fourth innings, piling on six runs to take control of the match. Sharron Orr proved the difference, finishing three from three with three RBIs and three stolen bases. Marlins recorded more hits overall but could not regain momentum, while Suiside remained composed in the field. In division three, Pi’s Panthers claimed a thrilling 17–15 win over Rams White in a high scoring decider.
