Federal MP and counter-terrorism expert Anne Aly warns terror organisations targeting Perth children

Federal Labor MP and counter-terrorism expert Anne Aly has urged parents to treat their child’s online interactions the same as they would those in the real world, warning terror organisations are “absolutely” trying to target Perth children. On last night’s episode of Channel 7 and The West Australian’s current affairs show Flashpoint, the Cowan MP spoke of her concerns for WA children in gaming environments. “The online space has become a trove for people who are seeking out to recruit and lead young people down the rabbit hole of radicalisation and extremism,” Ms Aly said. “Particularly, using chat rooms as a kind of gateway into children’s lives. “It’s happening right in front of our noses, right in our living rooms. It’s exactly like somebody taking the hand of your child and leading them away.” Ms Aly was on a panel that included professional gaming coach Fergus Stephenson, parenting expert Claire Orange, online safety expert and former cyber police officer Paul Litherland and The West Australian assistant editor Jenna Clarke. Their discussion came after a Seven West Media special investigation into how right-wing extremists were using online gaming forums. The West Australian yesterday revealed white supremacists were targeting Australian members to post sick content lauding Christchurch mosque mass-murderer Brenton Tarrant as a “hero” and giving vile tips for carrying out mass shootings. A private world had even been created on the children’s game Minecraft that mocked the Holocaust — complete with swastikas and gas chambers. Perth-based Microsoft representative Michelle Sandford said manufacturers had measures in place to protect children and remove extremist content. Ms Sandford told Flashpoint that Microsoft had recently unveiled a new filter to detect and flag extremist language in their games. “The game manufacturers are doing more,” she said. “If there is a toxic chat environment coming up it will block those and it will flag them and it will give people the option to report. “If I was a parent today I would be terrified by this conversation — it isn’t the gaming world I am familiar with at all. It isn’t what I see. “I know there are absolutely dark corners of the internet. There are some awful, awful people out there but they’re not gaming explicitly, they are across every segment of society. They shouldn’t be seeing that on Mindcraft. They’re seeing it in discourse in a Mindcraft group,” Ms Sandford said. “The average age of a gamer is 34-years-of-age (and) 43 per cent of people over the age of 65 identify as gamers.” Ms Sandford said far-right extremists were using every platform they could to corrupt people of all ages. “I don’t think this is a gaming problem — it’s a communication problem,” she said. Ms Orange said while the issue weighed on parents, game creators were actively trying to make elements addictive and the online space was “fertile” for groups to expand their influence. “There certainly is a very dark world out there that means that they are very vulnerable in that space,” she said.
