Hale School urges parents not to give their son a smartphone in Year 7 and to delay social media access

An elite Perth private boys’ school is urging parents to hold off giving their Year 7 sons a smartphone and to ban them from social media to protect them from online harm. Hale School headmaster Dean Dell’Oro revealed in a message sent to parents on Monday it would introduce a policy from next year to delay student ownership and use of smartphones “in an effort to protect our younger students”. “We are requesting that if you have a son in the junior school or Year 7 in 2025 that you delay giving him a smartphone or smartwatch and do not allow him access to social media,” he wrote. “If a mobile phone is absolutely necessary, then a dumb phone may be used, but must be kept out of reach during school hours.” The school will consider extending the new policy to Year 8s in 2026. Mr Dell’Oro said a survey of Hale parents found that most students were given their own phone when they started high school, so the new policy would target incoming Year 7s, plus younger boys, to head off feelings of “FOMO” (fear of missing out) and subsequent parental pressure. Responses by parents of Hale students in Years 6 to 11 indicated that 85 per cent believed children were beginning to use social media too early. Around 86 per cent of respondents believed children should be 14 or over to access social media, 75 per cent said they should be at least 15 and 56 per cent said 16. During the consultation, parents said they were concerned about their children being distracted by smartphones and their exposure to potentially damaging content. “We are at a moment in time where the harmful and unnecessary unintended consequences of early exposure to social media through technology is now well documented,” Mr Dell’Oro wrote. “We believe that banding together to delay this exposure will give children more time to develop the necessary interpersonal and critical thinking skills to navigate this technology more successfully later on.” The policy is an extension of Hale’s existing ban on mobile devices on campus that requires them to be kept in a locker during the school day. Hale’s move to limit students’ smartphone use comes after the Federal Government pledged to legislate a minimum age for children to be able to access social media. The Government has been consulting State and Territory leaders about the ban in a bid to land a nationally consistent approach. Mr Dell’Oro said the new policy was a pragmatic approach to a wider issue affecting young people. “In the 1980s, many schools turned a blind eye to cigarette smoking, and knowing what we do now, that is shocking,” he said. “I feel like we are reaching a similar point with smart devices and social media. “I don’t want to be turning a blind eye to the elephant in the room today. We know about the potential harms and we know parents are concerned — so let’s do something about it.” Other private schools contacted by The West Australian said they had no plans to impose similar policies. Scotch College headmaster Alec O’Connell said schools could provide advice, but phone and social media use outside of school hours was up to parents. “At the end of the day, the role of a parent is to parent,” he said. Aquinas College principal Robert Henderson said there was a continual dialogue between students, staff and families on the appropriate timing and use of devices. “It is certainly an evolving space for all involved in educating young people,” he said.
