A desperate search and rescue operation ended in tragedy after a man was found dead off the coast of Shark Bay this morning.

The 55-year-old man was believed to alone on a boat when he activated his EPIRB just after 6.30 this morning, near Bernier Island.

A volunteer marine search and rescue team scrambled to the man’s last known location, where they found him dead in the water near his sunken vessel.

The circumstances around his death, and what led him to activate his emergency distress beacon are not yet known.

The bureau of meteorology recorded westerly winds off the coast of Shark Bay, which gusted up to 20km/h.
