Collie bushfire: Residents told to stay on high alert as firefighters battle to contain blaze

A bushfire burning in the South West town of Collie has been controlled, but locals are being warned to stay alert.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services downgraded the emergency warning to a watch and act about 4.27pm on Wednesday after firefighters managed to get the blaze under control.

However, the bushfire is still not contained, with locals in the area bounded by Crampton Street, Prinsep Street, Mungalup Road, Minninup Road, including Minninup Pool, Skipworth Road and McVee Road told to stay alert and monitor their surroundings.

The blaze was first reported about 1pm, with firefighters rushing to the scene to battle the inferno. Water bombers were also sent to assist ground crews.

Shocking photographs show the bushfire burning dangerously close to the road, with locals guiding horses away from the blaze.

The mercury tipped to 37.1C about 1pm on Wednesday, before climbing to a sweltering 37.7C about 2pm.

A number of roads including McVee Road have been closed.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully.
