Police investigate Shoalwater Shopping Centre attack after husband and wife targeted in violent outburst

A husband and wife have claimed they were violently attacked at Shoalwater Shopping Centre — where one of them works as a cleaner — with the 50-year-old man saying he was too “scared to go back to work”. The couple, aged 49 and 50, who did not want to be identified to protect their safety, said the assault unfolded about 8.40pm on March 28. The female victim told The West Australian she had attended the centre with her partner while he completed his routine cleaning check before locking up. The woman claimed she had witnessed the assailant attacking a pregnant woman in the car park moments before he approached her and her partner. That prompted her to call the police and go back inside the shops. Shortly after, the woman said the attacker confronted her and her partner stepped in to protect her. “He came flying over with a karate kick and kicked my partner in the side. My partner got the milk crate I was sitting on and smacked him over the head with it to stop him,” the woman said. The woman suffered grazing to her head, while her partner received extensive bruising and tissue damage to the side of his body. The 50-year-old man has not returned to work since the incident, with his partner saying he has been left too traumatised. “He is 100 per cent scared to go back to work. It keeps playing through our heads each night since it happened,” she said. The couple has called for security at the centre to be beefed up. “It’s not a nice area. I’ve phoned the council and asked for more SmartWatch cars because every time I go there for the last couple of months the SmartWatch cars only go to the library, it never goes through the shopping centre,” the woman said. “With the liquor store above the tavern, you’d think they’d have more security there.” Rockingham police officers attended the shopping centre about 9pm. A WA Police spokesman said inquiries were ongoing. A Shoalwater Shopping Centre spokesman declined to comment.
