A man has been charged after he was allegedly caught speeding by a mobile speed camera before driving into it and destroying it.

Police say the 27-year-old was captured driving 107km/h in an 80km/h zone on Patterson Road near Ward Road in Rockingham.

It is alleged he then struck the camera with his Hyundai Lantra sedan before speeding away, obliterating the tripod and sending pieces of the camera into a nearby tree.

The Orelia man has been charged with exceeding the speed limit between 20 and 29km/h, criminal damage or destruction of property, driver failing to stop — property damage and failing to give information identifying the driver or person in charge of a vehicle.

He will face the Rockingham Magistrates Court on Friday.
