Mohammad Chami orchestrated a street punch-up with a man he thought had slept with his ex-wife, but was shot five times and killed after his opponent allegedly came armed.

The 40-year-old was gunned down by two men in a semi-industrial cul-de-sac in Sydney's western suburbs late one night in March 2022.

He was allegedly fired at six times by Ayman Manly, 42, who is standing trial in the NSW Supreme Court after pleading not guilty to murder.

"This accused man brought a gun to a fist fight and used it," crown prosecutor Eric Balodis SC told the jury on Monday.

Manly has also denied shooting at another man, known as Witness 1 for legal reasons, with an intent to murder or cause grievous bodily harm.

Mr Chami's relationship with his wife was an unhappy one as he took drugs, was unfaithful and jealous, Mr Balodis said.

He separated from his wife after an April 2021 incident during which he assaulted her and she stabbed him, the jury heard.

Thrown into prison days later for an unrelated matter, Mr Chami suspected his wife had returned to work at a brothel managed by Manly in Sydney's inner-west, Mr Balodis said.

Mr Chami also thought his ex-wife was sleeping with the other man, although she denied this, the 14 jurors were told.

On February 23, 2022, the court was told he texted Manly about a duel.

"Now straight up I we (sic) have to have a crack one on one and then I'll leave at that," he wrote.

After leaving his rival hanging at a park in Yagoona in the city's west, the jury heard Mr Chami eventually agreed to have the fight in the Merrylands dead-end street where the shooting took place.

"Some f***ing gronk calls me up, wants to fight me," Manly was heard saying to his wife in a recorded phone call played to the court.

On March 3, Mr Chami went to the Merrylands address with Witness 1.

As they waited, two men walked out of a tunnel at the end of the street.

Mr Chami raised his fists to strike the shorter of the two men before he was shot multiple times, the jury heard.

Witness 1 turned to flee and was shot once in the buttocks before he got to his car and drove away to notify police and paramedics.

The prosecutor claims Manly was one of the shooters while the identity of the other is unknown.

The 42-year-old's defence barrister denied the allegations.

"He wasn't there. He didn't shoot anyone," David Dalton SC told the jury.

There were no working CCTV cameras at the scene of the shooting and prosecutors will rely on cell phone towers connecting with three phones allegedly owned by Manly to prove where he was at the time.

The five-week trial in front of Justice Sarah McNaughton continues on Tuesday.
