Doubleview arrest: Bus passenger injured after driver of allegedly stolen car crashes, arrested by TRG

A stolen car has caused mayhem during a pursuit that began in Perth’s north before the erratic driver was arrested by the tactical response group when he tried to steal another car.

The dramatic ordeal began on Friday afternoon when a Land Rover Discovery bearing stolen plates failed to stop for police on Lower Quays Drive in Clarkson about 2.25pm.

A police spokeswoman said a pursuit continued through several northern suburbs before it was abandoned in the underground carpark at Westfield Whitford City shopping centre.

“It is alleged the driver then stole a Mazda BT-50 utility from the carpark,” she said.

The stolen car was monitored by the WA Police Air Wing helicopter after it was spotted being driven recklessly on Scarborough Beach Road.

Police said the Mazda swerved in front of a Transperth bus at the intersection of Huntriss Road, which caused the bus driver to brake heavily. The car then hit another vehicle before continuing to turn onto Huntriss Road.

One passenger on the bus suffered minor bruising, according to police.

The spokeswoman said the tactical response group were in the area at the time for an unrelated matter when they spotted the Mazda.

The driver is understood to have exited the running vehicle — and attempted to enter another car — before he was arrested.

When he left the Mazda, it rolled down Huntriss Road before crashing into a brick wall.

A 35-year-old man was arrested at the scene. No charges have been laid.
