A lush reserve where school children witnessed a brutal and viscous attack has fallen eerily quiet the day after the man died from his injuries.

Homicide squad detectives are now leading the investigation into the 63-year-old's death, six days after he was allegedly set upon by two men metres from a primary school on Melbourne's fringe.

There was a lack of a police presence near the Strathaird Primary School on Friday, and no remnants of the incident at the scene, not even flowers or tributes.

Police believe the man was first assaulted at the reserve near the school in Narre Warren South about 3.15pm on June 12 - not long before the home-time bell.

It's believed numerous people, students and parents alike, witnessed the attack and bloody aftermath.

The reserve, located just metres from the school, is lined with trees and features a large oval, popular with dog walkers and bordered by homes overlooking the parkland.

It also sits close to a children's centre.

The victim was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, but died on Thursday.

A Department of Education spokesperson told AAP on Friday they were aware of a distressing incident that occurred near the school last week.

"Our immediate focus is on supporting the school community. The safety and wellbeing of students and staff is always our priority," the spokesperson said.

"Those who witnessed the incident have been offered wellbeing support and the school is working closely with families."

Locals told AAP a week on from the attack they didn't know much about what happened, with one saying, "it's Narre Warren".

Two men, a 21-year-old man of no fixed place of address and a 22-year-old Narre Warren South man were charged last week with recklessly causing serious injury.

They remain in custody and are expected to return to court in July.

Police believe the parties involved were known to each other.
