Ryan Crowley: Former Fremantle Dockers player says he is ‘looking forward’ to defending string of DV charges

Former Fremantle Dockers player Ryan Crowley says he is “looking forward” to defending a string of domestic violence allegations including assaulting his ex-girlfriend “to the point of almost killing her”. Crowley has pleaded not guilty to 13 charges, including three counts of impeding another person’s normal breathing or blood circulation by blocking a nose or mouth and one count of making a threat to unlawfully kill, injure, endanger or harm a person. The offences are alleged to have occurred in Claremont, West Leederville and Cottesloe between 2019 and 2025. One of the alleged victim’s is Crowley’s ex-girlfriend, Lauren Dunn — a former Married at First Sight Contestant turned domestic violence advocate. The court previously heard Ms Dunn had described their five-year relationship as “toxic” and “highly volatile”, and had fled to New South Wales. Mr Crowley allegedly beat and strangled Ms Dunn in a fit of jealousy, leaving her unconscious. The 42-year-old fronted Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday for a trial allocation date, but the matter was adjourned after his stand-in counsel requested to move all his charges from the District Court to the Perth Magistrates Court. Mr Crowley had six charges — including endangering the life, health or safety of a person — committed to the District Court last year. The remaining seven summary charges were listed in Perth Magistrates Court. Following his brief appearance, when asked by media if he wanted to comment on his charges or the upcoming trial, Mr Crowley answered: “Not yet, looking forward to it.” He will return to court on May 26. A trial date is yet to be set. Mr Crowley spent a brief time in custody last year but was released on bail after his lawyer argued he had struggled to manage his diabetes while on remand. He played 188 games for the Fremantle Dockers between 2005 and 2014, before joining the Essendon Bombers in 2016.
